Deadly Airstrike in Chin State: Six Children Among Seven Victims
At least seven civilians, including six children, were killed when a Myanmar military airstrike hit Khaupuichiip village in western Chin State on Friday, local media and resistance groups said. The victims ranged in age from five months to ten years, underscoring the heavy toll on civilians in the strike. Reports did not specify the exact calendar date of the attack.
Khaupuichiip lies along the Falam–Rihkhawdar road near the Myanmar–India border, roughly 39 kilometres southwest of Falam town. Residents told reporters that a military jet dropped two 500-pound bombs at about 3 p.m., striking a village playground where children had been playing. In addition to the fatalities, about a dozen civilians were wounded, several critically.
The strike came days after the Myanmar military said it regained control of Falam on April 25 from the Chin Brotherhood, an alliance of Chin resistance groups, following a six-month counter-offensive. Local residents and resistance sources linked the air attack to the recent shift in control, but independent verification of who carried out the strike or its stated military purpose was not available in initial reports.
The Myanmar military had not issued an immediate statement on the incident at the time local outlets and resistance groups reported the deaths. Humanitarian and displacement concerns remain acute in the area, where fighting and air operations have repeatedly put civilians at risk.
