Urgent Government Probe into Tura Hospital’s Alleged Treatment Denial
The Meghalaya government has constituted a four-member inquiry committee to investigate allegations that a child suspected of having rabies was refused admission at Tura Civil Hospital in West Garo Hills. The Directorate of Health Services issued the order after media reports about the incident, which reportedly occurred on April 25. The committee has been asked to probe the circumstances and submit its findings within seven days.
The panel will be led by Dr Sombari Boro, Joint Director of Health Services (Garo Hills division). Other members are Dr Perosh Marak, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH & FW); Dr Cruzie N Sangma, District Medical and Health Officer; and Dr Valerie Laloo, State Surveillance Officer under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).
The committee’s mandate is to examine whether the child was denied admission as alleged and to identify any lapses, negligence, or dereliction of duty by hospital staff. It is expected to collect evidence, interview hospital personnel and witnesses, and assess adherence to clinical and public-health protocols relevant to suspected rabies cases.
The state’s swift formation of an inquiry follows public concern prompted by the media coverage. The involvement of a state surveillance officer from the IDSP underscores the public-health sensitivity of suspected infectious cases; the committee’s findings will determine any administrative or disciplinary action and guide further steps to prevent similar incidents.
