Press Club Urges Assam CS to Grant Govt Land for Permanent Office
A delegation from the executive committee of the Gauhati Press Club met Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota at Janata Bhawan in Guwahati on April 27 to press for the long-pending allotment of government land for a permanent Press Club office and to seek government support for a purpose-built facility. The club submitted a memorandum asking for a dedicated building fitted with modern technical facilities, training infrastructure, health check-up provisions and recreational amenities to better serve media professionals.
Among the proposals presented was a structured group health insurance scheme for journalists, to be implemented in partnership with a public sector undertaking or the state government. The memorandum framed these requests as measures to strengthen professional capacity, wellbeing and resilience within the region’s media community.
Terming the discussion constructive, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota praised the Gauhati Press Club’s role over more than five decades in strengthening the interface between the administration and the public. Kota said he had “assured them that their concerns will be examined with due priority and processed as per established procedures. Also discussed the need to clearly define the scope of ‘press’ in today’s expanding digital and media landscape,” in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Kota also requested the Press Club’s input in shaping a more inclusive, forward-looking policy framework so that benefits reach all deserving media professionals. “We agreed to work together in this direction — for a stronger media ecosystem and, ultimately, for the larger public good,” he added.
