Severe Heatwave in North India: IMD Issues Red Alert, Stay Safe
Large parts of India are under an intense heatwave as temperatures climb well above normal, with the national capital recording season-high readings and authorities issuing heat alerts to protect public health. Delhi hit a maximum of 44.5°C on Saturday, the highest so far this season, and remained above 40°C on Sunday, prompting a ‘yellow alert’ after reports of hot winds, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The IMD warned heatwave conditions are likely to persist across Northwest and Central India until April 28, affecting states including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, where daytime temperatures are expected between 40°C and 45°C. Central regions such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha are also reporting extreme heat.
In Uttar Pradesh, Prayagraj recorded 45.2°C — the state’s highest this season — and authorities have issued severe heat alerts in 32 districts, underscoring the widespread reach of the event. The IMD has also flagged the possibility of heatwave-like conditions extending to parts of southern India, notably Kerala and Mahe, in the coming days.
Health and safety advisories have been issued nationwide. Citizens are urged to avoid direct sun exposure between noon and 3 p.m., stay hydrated even if not visibly thirsty, and wear light-coloured, loose cotton clothing. Use of sun protection such as hats, umbrellas and sunglasses has been recommended.
Outdoor workers are advised to take extra precautions, including keeping a damp cloth on the head and neck to reduce heat stress. Officials have strongly warned against leaving children, elderly people or pets unattended inside parked vehicles.
Experts cautioned that if current trends continue, the heatwave could intensify, posing serious health risks — especially to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, outdoor labourers and those with chronic illnesses. The IMD and local authorities are monitoring conditions and may update alerts and advisories as needed.
