Former Virginia lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax shot his estranged wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, and then killed himself at their Annandale home, Fairfax County police and court records say. Officers who responded early Thursday found the bodies of Justin Fairfax, 47, and Cerina Fairfax, 49; the couple’s son called 911, police said. The killings occurred weeks before a judge-ordered deadline for Fairfax to move out of the family home.
Police Chief Kevin Davis said Justin Fairfax shot his wife in the basement and then went upstairs to an additional bedroom where he died by suicide. Authorities have not released a motive beyond details in court filings and statements from relatives and friends.
The couple were in the midst of divorce proceedings. In a March 30 order, the judge told Justin Fairfax to move out by the end of April, writing that “it is clear tensions in the Fairfax home have been extremely high for an extended period of time.” The judge also said Fairfax’s “isolation, drinking, and a lack of participation in family life are manifestations of what seems to be a sense of fatalism and hopelessness.”
Less than a decade earlier, Fairfax had risen quickly in Democratic politics after winning the 2017 race for lieutenant governor and briefly appearing poised to become governor in 2019. His trajectory was derailed when two women accused him of sexual assault; Fairfax said the encounters were consensual. He ran for governor in 2021 but was defeated in the Democratic primary.
Court filings by Cerina Fairfax say the couple separated nearly two years ago but continued living in the same house with their two teenage children, who were both at home when the deaths occurred. She testified that her husband drank daily, left empty wine bottles and laundry around the house, and that he bought a handgun in 2022 using money intended for their children’s horseback riding lessons.
Sophia A. Nelson, a longtime friend, said Fairfax never recovered from the 2019 scandal and that friends had urged him to seek help. Nelson said there had been “talks of suicidal thoughts” and that Fairfax referenced recent news about other politicians in a group text as reopening a sense of unfair judgment. Filings show he faced financial setbacks after the allegations, resigned from a law firm partnership, and had an IRS lien for more than $91,000 that was resolved in 2021.
Police said officers visited the home in January after Justin Fairfax alleged his wife had assaulted him; home camera footage reviewed by investigators showed the alleged incident did not occur. Public statements expressed shock and sympathy: “It’s very sad for this community,” Chief Davis said. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine said they were keeping the family — “especially their two children” — in their prayers, and Governor Abigail Spanberger wrote on X that the tragedy “reminds us that domestic violence can occur in any family and in any place.” Nelson, fighting back tears, warned that the killing will overshadow Fairfax’s public record: “You now fit what many, many men have done in domestic violence incidents like this,” she said.
