Woman Tea Worker Injured in Leopard Attack at Tinsukia — Shocking
Dibrugarh: A woman tea worker was injured after a leopard attacked her at Raidang Tea Estate in Doomdooma, Tinsukia district, on Saturday morning. The victim, identified as Mira Gajin, was reportedly pouncing while plucking tea leaves when the animal leapt on her, leaving her with injuries to her hand.
According to reports, colleagues rushed Gajin to the nearby Doomdooma FRU Hospital, where she is receiving treatment. “The woman sustained injuries to her hand and was admitted to the hospital. She is now receiving treatment,” a forest official said.
The attack prompted local residents to stage a protest outside the forest department office, demanding immediate action and the capture of the leopard. Residents told reporters the animal has been roaming the tea garden area for several months and accused authorities of failing to act despite repeated complaints. “For the last several months, the leopard has been venturing into the tea garden area. Despite repeated complaints, the forest department has failed to capture it. We demand that an iron cage be placed to trap the animal,” one resident said, adding that people live in constant fear.
Others said this was not the first such incident and blamed delayed responses for allowing risks to escalate. “This is not the first time a leopard attack has occurred here. If timely steps had been taken earlier, such incidents could have been prevented,” a second resident said.
Environmentalist Devojit Moran linked the rise in attacks to habitat loss, saying leopards are increasingly entering human habitations in search of food. “It is a major issue in Assam, and community participation is essential to address it,” he added. Residents continue to press the forest department for rapid action to prevent further incidents.
