কংগ্ৰেছৰ তীব্ৰ প্ৰতিবাদ: কেন্দ্ৰীয় চৰকাৰৰ ক্ষুৰধাৰ সমালোচনা
The Indian National Congress has renewed its attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over what it calls a deliberate delay in implementing the women’s reservation law, even after the bill was passed by Parliament. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh accused the ruling BJP of tabling the bill for electoral gains while denying women an immediate share in parliamentary representation, saying the government has effectively left the law’s enactment in limbo.
At the heart of the party’s complaint is the condition the government attached to the law: that the 33 percent reservation for women will come into force only after a new census and the redrawing of constituency boundaries are completed. Congress says tying implementation to the census and delimitation process turns the promise into an uncertain, multi-year wait and could prevent women from benefiting in the 2024 general election, with doubts even about rollout before 2029. The opposition has also criticised the bill for failing to include clear sub-reservations for women from other backward and marginalised communities. Congress argues that leaving these groups outside specific safeguards undermines the social-justice purpose of reservation and risks privileging only certain sections of women while excluding others who face compounded disadvantages.
Government supporters have defended the decision as legally and constitutionally cautious, saying census data and constituency delimitation are necessary to implement a nationwide seat reservation fairly. Opposition leaders, however, call that rationale a political dodge and insist the administration could have enacted the measure immediately if it prioritized women’s representation.
As the debate escalates between the ruling party and its critics, the timetable for the census and the constituency redrawing process will determine when, if at all, women receive their promised one-third representation in Parliament. The issue now hinges on procedural steps beyond the bill itself, leaving its real-world impact uncertain for the next several election cycles.
