NSF Condemns Attack on Naga Civilians in Manipur; Urgent Action Needed
The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned an alleged assault, death threat and extortion targeting two members of the Naga community in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, and has demanded immediate action from authorities. According to the Federation, the incident occurred in the early hours of March 23 between Keithelmanbi and Sapermeina, when the two individuals, who hail from Tseminyu district, were reportedly attacked while carrying out livelihood activities.
In its statement the NSF described the episode as a “brutal physical assault” accompanied by death threats and extortion, and warned that it appears to fit a recurring pattern of violence against Naga civilians. The organisation said such incidents disproportionately affect people who depend on daily trade and regular inter-district movement for their income.
The Federation highlighted wider concerns about the safety of civilians in transit areas, noting the particular vulnerabilities faced by communities that move across district and state boundaries for work and commerce. It said the reported targeting of commuters and traders undermines basic security and freedom of movement.
The NSF has urged authorities to identify, apprehend and prosecute those responsible without delay, and called for concrete, preventive measures to ensure the safety and security of civilians in the region. It asked for a swift law-enforcement response and practical steps to protect vulnerable travellers and traders.
Viewing the reported threats to the victims as serious, the Federation characterised the incident as a direct challenge to efforts to maintain peace and coexistence. The organisation expressed solidarity with the victims and extended support to the Rengma Students’ Union, which has taken up the matter.
The NSF warned that failure by authorities to deliver justice and implement safeguards could prompt further action from the organisation. It reiterated that criminality of this nature will not be tolerated and called for a response commensurate with the seriousness of the allegations, cautioning that repeated incidents could strain inter-community relations.
