Meghalaya: Stone-Pelting Disrupts KSU’s Khasi Awakening Rally in Laban
The Khasi Students’ Union’s (KSU) annual Sngi Kyrsiew Ri observance in Laban on April 4 was briefly disrupted when eyewitnesses alleged that unidentified individuals hurled stones from a house at marchers, prompting some participants to reportedly throw stones back. District officials and KSU leaders intervened, urging restraint, and the procession resumed without further incident; no injuries were reported.
According to onlookers, the exchange of stones was short-lived but had the potential to escalate an otherwise orderly event into a law-and-order problem. Organisers and local authorities moved quickly to calm the situation and keep the rally on course.
Despite the scare, the Khasi National Awakening Day observance proceeded with visible enthusiasm. The procession set off from the Bharat Scouts & Guides premises in Laban and moved to Shillong Vidyalaya Secondary School in Lumshatsngi. Participants carried portraits of Khasi-Jaintia freedom fighters, including Tirot Sing Syiem, U Kiang Nangbah, Ka Phan Nonglait and Wickliff Syiem, and raised slogans expressing love for the land.
Senior KSU figures Lambokstarwell Marngar and Donald V Thabah were present, joined by members who had travelled from across the state. Laban reflected the solemnity of the occasion: shops remained shut, vendors stayed away, and a visible police presence monitored the route.
Authorities said the incident did not develop into a major public order situation. Observed annually by the KSU, Sngi Kyrsiew Ri is marked as a day of remembrance and renewed commitment to the Khasi community’s cultural and political identity.
