Astrid Wege, director of the Goethe‑Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, met with officials of Sikkim’s Department of Culture at Manan Kendra in Gangtok on April 4, 2026, to explore possible cultural collaborations between the institute and the state. The meeting included a tour of the department premises, the State Central Library and the department’s studio led by chief engineer Rimp Dorjee Lepcha and other officials.

“We understood that there’s a mutual interest in collaboration in the field of film, music, literature,” Wege told Sikkim Express, describing the talks as “just the beginning” of a broader exchange. Discussions covered a range of activities, including film screenings, artist exchanges, bringing bands and filmmakers to the region, and conducting workshops that connect German and local artists.

Wege is in Sikkim to take part in the Biodesign Lab project. The regional lab, titled “Elemental Imprints,” is being held in Gangtok from April 2 to April 11, 2026. The initiative is a collaborative research and art project led by Goethe‑Institut South Asia in partnership with the Biodesign Lab at HfG Karlsruhe, produced locally with Echostream Gangtok and mediated by Strengthening Networks Amongst Artists on Northeast (SNANE).

She explained that Goethe‑Institut Kolkata operates within a global network active in 99 countries with around 150 institutes worldwide, six of which are in India. The Kolkata centre focuses on East India and the Northeast, which underpins its engagement in Sikkim and the Biodesign Lab program.

Wege outlined Goethe‑Institut’s three main areas of work. First is language education: the institute offers German courses and internationally recognised exams aligned with the Common European Framework, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). Second is cultural exchange: the institute facilitates artist residencies, co‑productions and tours, citing recent performance co‑productions involving Indian artists, including one from Mizoram. Third is providing access to contemporary Germany through libraries and multimedia resources.

She highlighted the Goethe‑Institut Kolkata library as a resource offering books, films, games and VR content in English, German and regional languages, aimed at presenting a holistic picture of German culture. Wege also referenced “My Way to Germany,” a comprehensive web portal and support project that assists individuals from non‑EU countries seeking to migrate to Germany for work or study.

Officials and the Goethe‑Institut signalled that the meeting was exploratory and open‑ended, aimed at building institutional links that could lead to workshops, exhibitions and longer‑term projects focused on sustainable design and cultural exchange in the Northeast.
