Refreshing Watermelon Bliss: Discover the Irresistible Sharbat at Madurai’s Roadside Gems!

On sweltering summer afternoons, the vibrant streets of Madurai come alive with colorful bottles of sharbat syrups, as vendors bustle to quench the thirst of eager customers. B Tamil Selvi and her mother have operated their modest sharbat shop near Pasumalai Arch for nearly seven years. “With the arrival of summer, especially after March, our business becomes incredibly busy,” Tamil Selvi notes. “Despite newer beverages hitting the market, traditional sharbat continues to be a favorite.”

Chef T. Gautam Venkat, a Madurai local, traces the heritage of sharbat back to the Middle East, where it was crafted to combat the oppressive heat. Originally made from rose petals and a mix of refreshing fruits like oranges and mangoes, the drink also incorporated chia seeds as a defining element. “As trade routes expanded, sharbat found its way into Indian culture,” he explains.

Tamil Selvi reminisces about the old methods of preparing sharbat: “In the past, we would prepare the syrup ourselves by soaking roots of the nannari plant for hours, then straining and boiling it with lemon slices and either palm sugar or jaggery. The drink was stored in clay pots for chill.” This nostalgic process stands in stark contrast to today’s convenience of readily available sharbat syrups.

Across the city, innovative flavors of sharbat have emerged to captivate local palates. V David draws in large crowds around Madura College, where he specializes in watermelon sharbat. Rather than serving watermelon as chunks, he creates a refreshing drink by smashing the fruit into a semi-liquid state, blending it with sharbat syrup and adding fruit chunks, soaked sabja seeds, and a hint of lime for a tangy zip. “I keep the ice to a minimum; too much can dilute the flavor,” he asserts.

In Ponmeni, P Isravel has been perfecting elaneer sharbat-a blend of tender coconut water mixed with sharbat and flecked with lemon and tender coconut slices-for over 15 years. “We thought, why not combine the two?” he explains, noting that peak sales occur between noon and 3 PM when the sun is relentless.

“This unique drink allows you to relish a bite of tender coconut with every sip,” says D Vinith Raj as he enjoys his drink near Ponmeni. “The mild coconut flavor precedes the sweetness.”

Not far from there, V Nageshwari serves a luscious milk sharbat near the Mathuthavani bus stand. This creamy drink, inspired by her son’s suggestion, combines sharbat syrup with milk and is complemented by sabja seeds. “The response from customers has been phenomenal,” she beams.

Meanwhile, M Surya, with her family’s support, has operated a sarbath shop near Lady Doak College for the past seven months. She has innovated the traditional offering by incorporating a variety of unique flavors into her menus. “Our milk sarbath is particularly popular, available in vibrant colors like strawberry and grape, appealing to the college crowd,” she shares.

As summer unfolds, Madurai’s diverse sharbat offerings remind us of the cherished traditions we uphold. For many locals like M Vishal, who have enjoyed Nannari sharbat since childhood, summer wouldn’t feel complete without this refreshing drink. “This is the first time I’ve tried milk sharbat, and it tastes fantastic,” he remarks, reveling in the nostalgia and new experiences that these drinks provide.

With their heritage and innovation, sharbat vendors across Madurai continue to celebrate this beloved drink, ensuring it remains an integral part of the city’s summer culture.
