Egmore Residents Demand Change: Weighing Infrastructure Upgrades Against Deep-Rooted Civic Challenges in T.N. Assembly Election
Egmore, located in the heart of Chennai, stands as one of the city’s oldest and politically significant constituencies. Encompassing diverse neighborhoods like Purasawalkam, Choolai, Vepery, Periamet, and parts of Chetpet, Egmore reflects the city’s socio-economic tapestry, hosting affluent areas alongside middle-class neighborhoods, traders, and daily wage workers. This constituency is enriched with key landmarks, including the Government Museum, Egmore Railway Station, and Ripon Buildings, embodying the intersection of historic identity and modern urban challenges.
Historically, Egmore has leaned towards the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), with the party securing victories since 1957. Notably, Parithi Ilamvazhuthi represented the seat for five consecutive terms from 1989. Current MLA I. Paranthamen, who garnered nearly 58% of the votes in the last Assembly election, has not been renominated for this upcoming election. Contesting positions are now filled by first-time contenders: Tamilan Prasanna from DMK, Abhishek Rangasamy of AIADMK, A. Rajmohan from TVK, and Saranya representing NTK.
As the polls approach, voter sentiment is increasingly shaped by discussions around civic challenges, job opportunities, and infrastructure needs, even amid improvements in housing and Metro Rail connectivity. Purasawalkam, one of Chennai’s oldest shopping hubs, is set for future Metro connectivity, yet construction has exacerbated congestion and hindered public transport access. Local leaders emphasize the need for regulated street vending along Purasawalkam High Road to ease pedestrian woes.
Waterlogging issues have improved, but sewage problems persist in areas like Clemens Road. The neighboring Vepery and Doveton still retain a significant Anglo-Indian population, with community leaders advocating for representation in government and college allocations. “We want the new government to allocate one seat in professional courses for our community,” stated Marlon Brewart, President of the All India Anglo-Indian Association, Vepery branch.
Motorists in the constituency face increasing frustration due to traffic caused by ongoing Storm Water Drain (SWD) work, particularly on Demellows Road and Choolai High Road. Local residents like J. Parthiban note that these congestion issues complicate daily commuting. Additionally, there is a call for upgrading SWD infrastructure, which remains inadequate despite the presence of expanding middle-class pockets and business activities.
The demand for enhanced housing and amenities is particularly strong in areas like Thattankulam and Thideer Nagar, with residents advocating for better maintenance of existing tenements, exemplified by the high-rise K.P. Park buildings. Issues like construction quality, malfunctioning lifts, and sustained calls for repaired roads and improved job prospects for the youth are constant themes among constituents. N. Manohar, a local resident, highlighted the need for more employment opportunities and sports facilities, particularly in Periamet, where concerns over drug abuse have been raised.
Notably, the constituency’s electoral base has contracted by 62,586 due to a recent SIR exercise. Advocates like G. Selva, CPI (M) secretary, noted over 800 houses were allotted in K.P. Park without any beneficiary contribution, while recent relocations promise hope for families previously displaced. The Town Vending Committee in Purasawalkam has aided street vendors, but more protective measures for low-income residents living in temple lands are crucial.
As TVK, a new political entrant, stirs interest among residents, analysts suggest it may not significantly disrupt traditional voting patterns in this historically DMK-dominated constituency. As Election Day approaches, Egmore’s legacy of civic aspiration intersecting with contemporary urban issues will be pivotal in shaping its political landscape.
