Assam Migrant Killed over Alleged Phone Theft in Kerala — Six Arrested
A 30-year-old man from Assam, identified as Noor Hasan of Nagaon district, was allegedly lynched by a group of his coworkers in the early hours of Wednesday at the workers’ quarters of AM Veneers, a plywood factory in Mudickal near Perumbavoor, Kerala. Police say the violence erupted at around 6:00 AM after several workers noticed mobile phones and cash missing from their room and suspected Hasan of theft.
According to preliminary police reports and local accounts, Hasan was confronted by a group of colleagues and the encounter quickly turned violent. Witnesses and reports say he was restrained and repeatedly beaten with wooden logs and rolling pins found on the factory premises, causing multiple fractures and internal injuries.
Hasan was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The Perumbavoor police have taken six men into custody in connection with the attack; the arrested have been named as Alauddin, Minarul, Zakir Hussain, Habizuddin, Hassan Ali and Muzammil. Authorities said all six are also natives of Assam and worked at the same unit.
The suspects have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103(1) for murder and provisions relating to unlawful assembly and common intention. The accused maintain that Hasan was caught attempting to steal seven mobile phones and about Rs 73,000 in cash, but police said they are still verifying those claims.
“We are investigating whether a theft actually occurred or if this was a result of a tragic misunderstanding,” a senior police officer said. Hasan’s body was moved to Perumbavoor Taluk Hospital for inquest procedures before being sent for a post-mortem examination. Police investigations are ongoing.
