Two Border Security Force (BSF) officers were injured on Monday, March 30, during a raid on a suspected drug hotspot in Gujjar Basti village in the Supwal area of Samba district, Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the officers were attacked by locals while carrying out the operation.
The injured personnel have been identified as Inspector Imtiyaz and Sub-Inspector Devender Kumar. Reports said both officers were not in uniform at the time of the incident. They were taken to AIIMS Jammu for treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Police have registered a case and an investigation is under way; further details are awaited.
The incident comes against the backdrop of security challenges along Jammu and Kashmir’s international border and the Line of Control. The BSF guards a roughly 240-kilometre international border across Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts, where it is tasked with preventing infiltration, exfiltration, drug smuggling and hostile drone activity allegedly launched by terror outfits with support from across the border. Such drones have reportedly carried arms, ammunition, cash and drugs, which overground workers (OGWs) retrieve and pass to militants.
Separately, the union territory has about a 740-kilometre Line of Control in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Poonch, Rajouri and parts of Jammu, which is guarded by the Army performing analogous security duties. In the hinterland, anti-terror operations and actions against drug smugglers, peddlers and hawala networks are conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police alongside security forces. The BSF has also deployed hi‑tech anti‑drone equipment along the international border, and authorities say drone activity by terror outfits has decreased since the installations.
