Himanta Biswa Sarma: BJP Vows Harmony, Slams Congress’ ‘Miya’ Politics
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 30 told voters at a string of election rallies that different communities in the state are living in harmony under BJP rule and launched a sharp attack on the Congress as campaigning intensified ahead of state polls. Sarma spoke at gatherings in Dhemaji, Majuli, Naoboicha and Sadiya, outlining his party’s record and contrasting it with the opposition.
Sarma accused the Congress of practising what he called “appeasement politics” and said it had neglected the welfare of indigenous communities. He said the BJP government, by contrast, is working for all sections of society, including Assamese, Bengali and Hindi-speaking people, Gorkhas and tribal communities.
The chief minister alleged that the Congress had prioritised certain groups during its tenure, and said the BJP has shifted focus toward indigenous welfare since taking office. He claimed significant changes have occurred in the state after the BJP came to power in 2016.
Highlighting Majuli, Sarma said the river island has seen development only after the BJP assumed office and noted that he has visited the area multiple times to oversee projects. He dismissed the Congress’s election slogan “Natun Bor Asom” and said his vision of a “Bor Asom” draws on the ideals of Srimanta Sankardev and Chaolung Sukapha.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4. The chief minister’s remarks come as parties step up outreach across constituencies ahead of the vote.
