Ajmal Warns of CM’s Defeat, Exposes BJP’s Anti‑Minority Rhetoric
Guwahati, March 30 — With the April 9 Assam Assembly polls imminent, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal on Monday predicted that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would be defeated and would “whimper” after the results, accusing the BJP-led government of repeatedly targeting the minority community and saying his party will perform strongly.
Ajmal, who is contesting the Binnakandi Assembly seat, directly attacked the chief minister’s rhetoric, saying Sarma “is currently mocking ‘miyas’, threatening to break necks and backs; this time, his back will be broken, not ours. Let him try his best to cling to power,” he told reporters.
He accused the NDA government of using divisive language aimed at a specific community and said AIUDF would continue to protest what it describes as contempt, insults and humiliation directed at that group. “We have observed a disturbing trend in their rhetoric that they are specifically targeting a particular community… We are protesting against this behaviour, and we will continue to protest until the very end,” Ajmal said.
Ajmal also criticised the broader political discourse for sidelining development, arguing that campaign talk has focused on communal squabbles rather than governance. “While the entire world is progressing, here we are engaged in petty squabbles over ‘miya, miya’. It is a matter of shame. We should be thinking about how to take the country forward,” he said.
Outlining AIUDF’s priorities, Ajmal said education, secure land deeds for people, political representation, healthcare, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and deep water projects would remain central to the party’s campaign and require urgent resolution.
On possible electoral cooperation, Ajmal indicated AIUDF would work closely with Asaduddin Owaisi, saying, “We will join forces with him and contest together. We believe his vision and strategy will benefit us.”
Acknowledging that health problems had limited his campaign outreach, Ajmal said his inability to visit several constituencies had been a setback for candidate morale but expressed confidence in party workers. “Had I been able to visit, it would have boosted the morale of our candidates. Nevertheless, our workers will continue to work hard and, God willing, we will emerge victorious,” he said.
