An Iranian missile strike on a power and water desalination plant in Kuwait on Monday morning killed an Indian worker, raising the number of Indian citizens reported killed in the widening West Asian conflict to at least eight, authorities and media say. Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water said on its X account that the attack severely damaged a service building at the facility; emergency rescue and technical teams were dispatched to restore power and water supplies.
The Indian government had earlier reported seven nationals killed and one missing after days of strikes and interceptions; the death in Kuwait raised the toll to eight. Earlier, debris from a ballistic missile intercepted over Abu Dhabi fell to the ground and killed another Indian national, officials said.
Al Jazeera reported that air-raid sirens rang out across parts of the Gulf on Monday morning, including in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Security sources said residents in Bahrain heard large explosions, attributed to missile interceptions.
The clashes follow what sources describe as a five-week confrontation that began after a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran. Iran has since launched drone and missile attacks against U.S. bases and other targets across several countries in the region, framing the strikes as retaliation.
U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is open to talks but has not signaled a ceasefire. Last week, his administration announced a 10-day delay on strikes targeting Iranian energy infrastructure; Iran warned that any attack would prompt it to target Gulf states’ energy interconnections. Iran has effectively disrupted traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a move that has pushed up oil prices and added instability to the global economy.
The Trump administration has deployed additional U.S. Marines to the region and is reportedly preparing to send tens of thousands more troops. As the crisis escalates, migrant and expatriate workers in the Gulf have emerged as some of the most vulnerable and immediate victims of the violence.
