Iran-Israel War: Iran’s Ceasefire Bid Demands Reparations, Hormuz Rule
U.S. President Donald Trump sent a peace plan to Iran and voiced optimism on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, about ending nearly a month of warfare, as Tehran said it would allow “non-hostile” oil vessels to pass through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The move raised tentative hopes for a diplomatic de-escalation even as fighting continued elsewhere in the region.
The signs of a possible diplomatic breakthrough came amid new violence: an Iranian missile reportedly caused injuries in Israel, which responded by pressing attacks on multiple fronts and vowed to seize control of a strip of southern Lebanon. The clashes underscore how fragile any ceasefire prospects remain.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said, “They did something yesterday that was amazing actually. They gave us a present and the present arrived today. And it was a very big present worth a tremendous amount of money. That meant one thing to me — we’re dealing with the right people.” He offered no further explanation but said the development was related to the Strait of Hormuz.
Shortly after Mr. Trump’s comments, a message circulated by the International Maritime Organization quoted Tehran as assuring safe passage for “non-hostile vessels” through the strait, which serves as the conduit for about one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies. Iran had recently said it was not targeting friendly nations, but many commercial ships have avoided the area while insurers refuse to take on the heightened risk.
