Update: 776 Candidates Cleared; Dhekiajuli & Barpeta (SC) Pending
A day after nominations closed for the Assam Assembly elections, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer said scrutiny of nomination papers has validated 776 candidates across 124 constituencies. In a statement on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the office added that “the verification process for the remaining two constituencies, namely 24 Barpeta (SC) and 65 Dhekiajuli, has been adjourned till 11 a.m. on March 25.”
A total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 nomination papers, the office said, and the numbers were pared down during scrutiny as duplicate and invalid nominations were removed. Officials completed scrutiny in 124 of the state’s 126 Assembly seats, with final checks pending in the two constituencies named in the statement.
Scrutiny in Dhekiajuli has attracted attention after Congress candidate Batash Orang lodged objections to the nomination of BJP nominee and minister Singhal, alleging discrepancies in the documents submitted. Orang wrote to the Returning Officer saying he had examined the BJP candidate’s papers and found anomalies.
As of the time of filing this report, the Election Commission of India’s official website did not show Singhal’s nomination as accepted. The outcome of the adjourned verification in Dhekiajuli will determine whether the objection proceeds or the nomination is confirmed.
The Election Commission has reiterated that the last date to withdraw candidature is March 26, 2026, until 3 p.m. Candidates who do not withdraw by that deadline will remain on the ballot for the upcoming polls.
