LPG prices are revised monthly by state-run oil companies, and recent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have led to a sharp increase of ₹60 per cylinder. This spike is primarily attributed to disruptions in shipping and gas supplies, particularly due to the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz-a vital maritime route for global oil transport. The situation has triggered volatility in oil markets and raised concerns over an impending energy crisis.
Despite current petrol, diesel, and LPG prices holding steady across Indian cities, fears of future supply disruptions have prompted panic buying among consumers. The Strait of Hormuz is critical, facilitating about 40% of India’s crude oil imports, making the ongoing instability in the region even more alarming.
In response to the escalating situation, the Indian government has formed seven empowered groups aimed at tackling emerging energy challenges. One key group focuses on petroleum, LNG, LPG, and energy and is led by Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. This team comprises senior officials from various sectors, including power, coal, and mining, as well as heads of major public sector undertakings like ONGC, IOC, and GAIL.
Traders and ship-tracking data from LSEG indicate a concerning trend, projecting that India’s LPG imports could halve this month. Approximately 60% of India’s LPG supply comes from Gulf nations, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, which collectively account for 85-90% of the country’s energy needs. The ongoing conflict and the partial blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are creating a significant supply shortage, which has impacted imports starting from early March.
Forecasts reveal a staggering 46% decline in daily LPG imports compared to February, with an expected total of 1.190 million metric tons this month, largely as a consequence of the US-Israeli conflict concerning Iran. In light of this energy crisis, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced new measures to expand natural gas infrastructure, aiming to diversify fuel sources for the country.
The ministry’s recent directive underscores that the constraints on both liquefied petroleum gas and natural gas supply may persist for the foreseeable future. These limitations stem from damage and shutdowns at Gulf liquefaction facilities, which are crucial for supplying India, coupled with the ongoing blockage in the Strait of Hormuz.
