Kamjong Tribal Villagers Protest PMAY-G Housing Funding Delays
Tribal villagers in Ningthi village of Kamjong district staged a sit-in on Thursday to protest prolonged delays and alleged irregularities in the release of housing funds under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY-G). Beneficiaries said only the first installment has been paid since 2022, even though many have already completed house construction, and they vowed to continue demonstrating until outstanding payments are cleared.
Protest placards read, “When will our PMY installment be released?” and participants accused officials of failing to respond to repeated follow-ups. M. Shimray, a beneficiary from the Tangkhul Naga tribe, told reporters, “We have completed all our house construction, but the second installment has not been cleared.”
Organisers said the protest involved only PMAY-G beneficiaries who have completed work without receiving subsequent instalments. They urged faster disbursement of the remaining funds to finish formalities and secure their homes.
Officials, however, said that in Kamjong T.D. Block of the district, 223 of the 413 PMAY-G beneficiaries have completed their houses and received final instalments. They added that 190 houses are still under construction, with 61 at the plinth level and 129 at the lintel level.
Launched on April 1, 2016, PMAY-G is the central government’s rural housing mission under the Ministry of Rural Development. The scheme aims to provide a pucca house with basic amenities to houseless families and those living in kutcha or dilapidated dwellings.
