Changlang Murder Triggers Protests in Charaideo — Identity Clarified
Digboi: A murder reported in February at Tuhi Mill in the 9 Mile area of Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, has sparked student-led protests and a subsequent clarification after a mistaken identity surfaced during the agitation. The victim, identified as Raju Bhuyan of Charaideo district in Assam, was allegedly killed by an associate who later fled the scene.
The All Adivasi Students’ Association (AASA), Charaideo District Committee, together with its Margherita Regional Committee, launched an independent inquiry and staged a road blockade on the Margherita–Changlang road on February 28 to press for action and draw public attention. Journalists who covered the demonstration reported claims about the mill’s ownership that later proved inaccurate.
Speaking to NeNow on March 21, the student body demanded a high-level joint probe by agencies from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and called for strict action against those responsible for the murder. Initial reports tied Kamlung Mossang to ownership of Tuhi Mill, but subsequent verification found he has no ownership or business connection with the property.
Former Bordumsa MLA Somlung Mossang, whose brother Kamlung Mossang is an Advisor to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, a former cabinet minister and the sitting Miao legislator, expressed alarm at his brother’s name being raised. He said the false association seemed aimed at creating chaos and undermining the goodwill between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, diverting attention from the central crime. Somlung Mossang added that his family lives in Miao and has no business interests at the mill site, and he urged a thorough investigation and a formal clarification from the media outlet involved.
The media house issued a clarification saying its earlier report relied on statements made during the agitation by members of the All Assam Adivasi Students’ Union (AAASU). Journal Minz, who was serving as secretary of the students’ body at the time, said the information had been relayed by a mill manager and that an internal review found Kamlung Mossang’s name was wrongly raised in slogans during the protest. Minz said later demonstrations, including the February 28 blockade, did not include such references and expressed regret over the earlier linkage to alleged timber activities.
The episode highlights the need for careful verification during fast-moving protests, especially when public statements can quickly damage reputations amid an ongoing criminal investigation.
