Nagaland Police Urgently Warn Assam-Bound Travellers of Election Checks
Nagaland Police on March 19, 2026, issued a public advisory urging citizens travelling to Assam to exercise caution as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. The notice said surveillance and checks have been intensified at inter‑state borders and other key locations to ensure the “free, fair and transparent conduct of elections.”
The advisory warned that several otherwise law‑abiding travellers have faced inconvenience because they were unaware of election‑related restrictions. To avoid legal complications, the police asked people moving across the Nagaland–Assam border to strictly follow guidelines and carry supporting documentation.
Authorities specifically cautioned against carrying large amounts of cash without valid proof, saying it could lead to detention or seizure during checks. Carrying valuables such as gold or silver without proper documentation may also invite scrutiny or confiscation, the advisory added.
The notice further advised that transporting political or campaign material-pamphlets, posters or similar items-without authorisation is prohibited and may attract legal action. Travellers were told to expect thorough vehicle checks at multiple points and to cooperate with officials.
Police reiterated that carrying arms and ammunition without a valid licence and permission is strictly forbidden. They asked commuters to carry valid identity proof and any necessary permits to speed up inspections and avoid delays.
Nagaland shares a 512‑kilometre inter‑state boundary with Assam across at least seven districts. Polling for the 126‑member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, 2026, with counting of votes on May 4, 2026.
