Moromor Deuta: Bhabendra Nath Saikia’s Classic Hits Theatres May 15
The much-anticipated Assamese film Moromor Deuta, adapted from Bhabendra Nath Saikia’s celebrated novel of the same name, is set to release across theatres in Assam on May 15. Directed by Himjyoti Talukdar and produced by Mamata Mahilari, the film promises a faithful, contemporary cinematic retelling of the story that many readers grew up with.
First serialized in the children’s magazine Xofura between 1989 and 1990, Moromor Deuta is widely regarded as a landmark Assamese novel that captures the complexities of adolescence. The book was later included in school curricula during the 1990s and is noted for its sensitive exploration of teenage psychology and family dynamics.
The story follows Pradip Barua, a school headmaster posted in an isolated hill town in Arunachal Pradesh, who struggles to maintain normalcy while living apart from his family. His wife, daughter and troubled son Partha live in a small Assamese town. Over time the emotional distance widens and Partha spirals into aggression, alcoholism and self-destructive behaviour, inflicting pain on his mother and sister.
Tension escalates when Partha attacks a local electrician and, shortly after, is himself found brutally beaten and rushed to hospital. A police inquiry begins to reveal links to local criminal elements, and the narrative shifts into a search for hidden truths, old conflicts and a father’s desperate attempt to protect his family from threats that arise within their own circle.
Talukdar, whose previous films include Calendar (2018) and Taarikh (2025), says the film examines “the unspoken struggles that families endure — the guilt, fear, and emotional isolation that parents experience when love alone isn’t enough to protect their child.” He adds, “Through the journey of Pradip Barua, the film poignantly illustrates themes of helplessness and resilience, while also exploring the complex moral dilemmas that can influence the delicate relationships within a home.” Script development for the adaptation began in 2018, the team says, with deliberate efforts to keep the story’s emotional core intact while making it resonate with today’s audiences.
Smti Preeti Saikia, Managing Trustee of the Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust and Saikia’s spouse, welcomed the adaptation: “It is a moment of immense pride and deep emotion to witness Moromor Deuta come to life on the big screen. This work held great significance for Saikia… Observing it being revitalised through cinema is indeed remarkable, as it extends his legacy to a new generation of viewers.”
The film introduces Bodhisattva Sharma in the lead role. Sharma has garnered national attention for performances in the web series Paatal Lok and Rana Naidu, and the film All India Rank. The supporting cast features Mintu Baruah, Aparna Dutta Choudhury, Gaurav Bora, Arun Nath and Kula Kuldeep, alongside other new and veteran actors.
Since the release date was announced on social media, Moromor Deuta has generated strong excitement, particularly among readers who grew up with the novel in the 1990s. The filmmakers say they hope the film will reconnect modern audiences with Assamese literary heritage and introduce Bhabendra Nath Saikia’s work to a fresh generation.
