UPPL Signals NDA Exit Ahead of Assam Polls — Decision March 16
The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) said it is weighing withdrawal from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of the upcoming elections after a core committee meeting in Kokrajhar on March 15, 2026. Party leaders told reporters the move follows what they describe as an unanswered letter sent on March 10 to the Assam state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and internal deliberations on whether remaining in the alliance serves the region’s interests.
UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary said the party discussed the issue at length during the core committee meeting and that an official decision will be announced on March 16, 2026. He added that the party has already begun road rallies across the region and insisted the final call will reflect public sentiment, saying: “Whatever decision the people make, we will accept it. We have left it upon them.”
Narzary underlined the UPPL’s concern for preserving the balance of power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), noting local voters often turn to state legislators if they are dissatisfied with their representatives in the council. The party used the term MCLA-Member of Council Legislative Assembly-to refer to BTC council members. (bodoland.gov.in) He said the UPPL remains “hopeful for the best” as discussions continue.
On the resignation of former Assam minister Chandan Brahma, Narzary expressed gratitude for Brahma’s past contributions and recalled that the party had earlier given him the ticket from Kajalgaon as an MCLA candidate. He also noted that the UPPL defeated Brahma in 2021 when he was not part of the party, and wished him well in his future political career.
Any formal exit from the NDA would reshape alliance dynamics in the Bodoland Territorial Region and could influence seat arithmetic ahead of the polls; the UPPL’s announcement on March 16 will clarify the party’s position.
