Congress Unveils 2nd Assam Candidate List, Keeps 15 Seats for Allies
The Indian National Congress on Friday released its second list of candidates for the forthcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with the party’s Central Election Committee approving nominees for more than twenty constituencies across the state ahead of the 2026 polls. The move marks the Congress’s latest step in finalising its slate while negotiating seat-sharing with alliance partners and shaping its campaign map across Assam’s diverse regions.
Prominent names in the list include Kartik Chandra Ray, fielded from Golokganj, and veteran leader Wazed Ali Choudhury, who will contest from Birsing Jarua. The party has nominated Amrit Badsha for Bilasipara and Mohibur Rohman for Mankachar, signalling contests in several border and minority-concentrated constituencies.
Other candidates announced are Abul Kalam Rasheed Alam from Goalpara East, Kishor Kumar Brahma from Dudhnai, Nurul Islam from Srijangram, and Abdul Khaleque from Mandia, reflecting the party’s emphasis on regional representation. In key urban and semi-urban seats, Pranjit Choudhury will contest Rangia, Santanu Borah has been named for New Guwahati, and Rijumoni Talukdar for Mangaldai.
The list also includes Jhilli Choudhury for Hojai, Batash Urang for Dhekiajuli, and Dr. Sankar Jyoti Kutum for Gohpur. Further nominees announced are Sailen Sonowal from Dhemaji, Devid Phukan from Tinsukia, Bipul Gogoi from Tingkhong, and Sagorika Bora from Dergaon. Dhrubjyoti Purkayastha has been named for Dholai, while Aminur Rashid Choudhury will contest Karimganj South.
The Congress said several constituencies will be left for alliance partners as part of its broader electoral strategy; among the seats mentioned were Bhawanipur-Sorbhog, Bajali, Palasbari, Guwahati Central, Goreswar, Morigaon, and Barhampur. The party did not provide a full list of seats reserved for allies or detail which partner would receive each seat.
The announcement completes another round of candidate finalisations for the state polls and sets the stage for intensified campaigning and seat-sharing talks. The party may release further lists as talks with allies progress and as final approvals are completed ahead of the election schedule.
