Nagaland University Medziphema Book Fair: Vibrant Campus Readings
A two-day book fair organised by the School Library of the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Nagaland University, concluded on March 13 at the Old Administrative Building on the Medziphema campus. Held on March 12–13, the exhibition brought nationally reputed publishers and suppliers from Delhi and Guwahati to a campus audience of students, research scholars, faculty and staff, offering a one-stop venue to browse and buy academic books for teaching, learning and research.
According to a university press release, the fair aimed to give the academic community easy access to new publications and to encourage reading and research among students and staff. Mhonbemo Ngullie, Deputy Librarian of the SAS library, said the event was organised to provide a platform for the campus community and to foster reading habits and research, adding that “the response from the faculty members, students and research scholars had been quite encouraging.”
Organisers said the exhibition allowed direct interaction between visitors and publishers and suppliers, helping attendees locate the latest titles and discuss availability, editions and pricing on the spot. The presence of vendors from major publishing centres expanded choices beyond what is usually available locally.
Pro Vice‑Chancellor of the SAS campus, Prof Depak Sinha, praised the library’s initiative and stressed the continuing value of printed books in academic study. While acknowledging that information and research publications are increasingly available in digital formats, he said books still offer greater depth and context. He urged students to read regularly, noting that “there is no substitute for reading a physical book and engaging with it thoroughly,” and advised them to make full use of the university library’s holdings.
Faculty members at the fair welcomed the range of academic publications on display, saying the event benefited both teaching and research and helped sustain a reading culture at Nagaland University. Several expressed hope that more publishers would participate in future fairs to further widen access.
Students and research scholars gave positive feedback, saying the fair was timely with examinations approaching and useful for identifying relevant study materials. Many described books as their “best friends” in the academic journey. A research scholar also pointed out that, because the campus is relatively remote with limited local bookstores, the exhibition offered a valuable chance to discover titles and publishers otherwise hard to reach.
Organisers reported a good turnout over the two days and said participant feedback was largely positive. They expressed hope that similar initiatives will continue to promote reading habits and strengthen academic engagement at the Medziphema campus.
