Explosive: Himanta Alleges Pawan Khera Sought Militant Help in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 12 in Guwahati alleged that senior Congress leader Pawan Khera attempted to contact militant groups in the state to influence the upcoming Assembly elections, saying multiple FIRs have been registered and investigations are underway. Sarma said the cases relate specifically to attempts to establish contact with militant organisations and framed the allegations as part of a broader law-and-order probe ahead of the polls.
Sarma told reporters that “there are three to four cases already registered in the name of Pawan Khera for trying to contact some militant organisations in Assam to influence election results. Investigations are going on. Who will end up in jail-you will know after the elections,” attributing the disclosure to ongoing investigative activity by authorities.
The chief minister’s remarks followed public criticism from Khera, who earlier accused Sarma of corruption and urged what he called an “apology tour” by the Bharatiya Janata Party over issues of development and alleged illegal infiltration. The exchange marks a fresh escalation in political tensions between the BJP and the Indian National Congress in Assam as campaigning intensifies.
The allegations come with Assam headed to assembly polls expected in March or April 2026. Illegal immigration and border security are already prominent campaign issues, and the dispute underscores the high stakes: the BJP aims to retain power for a third consecutive term while the Congress seeks to regain ground in the state’s electoral battlegrounds.
Officials have not released details of the FIRs Sarma referenced, and no formal response from Pawan Khera was immediately available. Authorities say investigations are ongoing; any legal outcomes or confirmations of the chief minister’s claims will depend on results from those probes.
