Parliament Suspended After Opposition’s Fiery Protest
Parliament’s budget session was thrown into chaos on Thursday, March 12, as opposition MPs staged vociferous protests over a severe LPG (cooking gas) shortage and the economic fallout of recent West Asia conflict, forcing the Lok Sabha to be adjourned until 2 p.m. shortly after proceedings began in the morning. The disruption followed a failed no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday; on Thursday opposition leader Rahul Gandhi moved a proposal to adjourn the House over the LPG crisis, while members shouted slogans and demanded urgent government action.
Speaker Om Birla responded to allegations that he had muted opposition MPs, saying he was committed to preserving the dignity and discipline of the House. Reacting to the earlier no-confidence move, Birla described the suspension of members as a painful but necessary step taken only after rules were repeatedly broken. He also denied there is any “mute” button at the Speaker’s chair, saying members are able to speak only when their turn comes.
Rahul Gandhi fired back at BJP MPs, including responding to comments by Ravi Shankar Prasad, asserting that the Lok Sabha does not represent a single party but the entire nation. Gandhi accused the government benches of repeatedly obstructing him from speaking in the House, and used the adjournment bid to press the LPG supply issue.
Meanwhile in the Rajya Sabha, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded an immediate response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the economic repercussions of the West Asia conflict. The Upper House also saw sharp exchanges over security in Jammu and Kashmir after Kharge raised the attack on National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah, prompting BJP leader J.P. Nadda to say the government would ensure strict punishment for the perpetrators while urging against politicising the incident.
Debate in the Rajya Sabha ranged beyond politics to economic policy and heritage issues. CPI MP Santosh Kumar strongly opposed proposals to increase foreign direct investment in the insurance sector, warning that such moves could have adverse effects on the country’s economy. The Houses also discussed archaeological excavations in Amaravati that have unearthed Buddhist relics of historical importance, and deliberated on conservation matters related to Jaipur’s UNESCO heritage precincts.
The day’s confrontations between the ruling party and the opposition disrupted a wide range of parliamentary business, underscoring escalating tensions as lawmakers pressed the government on fuel supplies, national security and economic policy amid broader geopolitical uncertainties.
