BSF DIG’s Convoy Attacked in Garo Hills, Vehicle Set Ablaze
A Border Security Force (BSF) convoy carrying a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) was attacked in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills, leaving several personnel with minor injuries and one vehicle torched, officials said on Thursday. The convoy was returning from a meeting in Tura, near the India–Bangladesh border, when a group of people attacked it on Wednesday evening, according to official statements.
The DIG and other officers travelling with him sustained minor injuries; one BSF vehicle that fell behind the convoy was set on fire by the attackers. Authorities have not released further details about the identity or motive of the assailants and said investigations are ongoing, officials added.
The BSF, which guards the 4,096‑km India–Bangladesh border, is responsible for roughly 443 km of the frontier that runs through Meghalaya. The force has been deployed in the region amid rising tensions linked to local council elections.
The attack follows a week of escalating violence in the Garo Hills connected to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections. Clashes between tribal and non‑tribal groups over the filing of nomination papers earlier this week resulted in two deaths, officials said.
In response to the deteriorating law-and-order situation, authorities imposed curfews in West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills districts and suspended mobile internet services across five districts in the region. The state government has also postponed the council elections that had been scheduled for April 10, citing the outbreak of violence.
Officials have described the situation as volatile and said additional security measures are being taken to stabilise the area while investigations into the convoy attack continue.
