Manipur Woman Assaulted in South Delhi Park — Racism Outrage
A young woman from Manipur and a transgender person from Assam were allegedly assaulted by a group of men in a park in Malviya Nagar on Sunday evening, near the Saket District Court Complex, heightening concerns about the safety of northeastern residents in the national capital. According to preliminary accounts, the two were taking a walk when a group of youths reportedly directed racially derogatory remarks at them; when the woman objected, the situation escalated into a confrontation.
The victims alleged the men physically attacked them, punching them and striking them with belts while hurling abusive slurs. One of the assailants is also said to have used a derogatory term during the altercation. Sources told reporters the two had faced similar verbal harassment in the locality on earlier occasions.
The Delhi Police said a team responded after receiving information about the alleged assault near the Saket court complex. “When one of the girls objected to the comments, the situation escalated and she was reportedly assaulted by the accused,” the police said. The injured woman was taken to Safdarjung Hospital for medical examination and treatment; authorities said, based on preliminary reports, she is in stable condition with minor injuries. Police officials added they are in constant touch with the victim and have assured that strict action will be taken. The matter is under investigation.
The incident comes days after a separate racial-abuse case in the capital sparked widespread outrage and led to the arrest of a Delhi-based couple. Police said a man named Harsh Singh was booked for allegedly racially abusing three women from Arunachal Pradesh following a dispute over repair work at their rented apartment on February 20 at about 3:30 pm. The women had called an electrician to install an air conditioner; drilling caused dust and debris to fall into the flat below, prompting objections from Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain, and a heated exchange. The women alleged the couple hurled racist remarks and humiliating comments, saying they were called “gutter-chaap,” told to “go and sell momos,” among other abuses.
Taken together, the incidents have renewed calls for greater protection and accountability as northeastern residents and activists demand safer public spaces in Delhi. Police investigations in both cases are ongoing.
