Can Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) Achieve What Dhoni, Kohli Couldn’t?
India will meet New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8, as captain Suryakumar Yadav seeks to achieve what predecessors MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli could not: defend a world title and become the first side to win the T20 crown three times. The hosts enter as defending champions and favourites, but New Zealand — who have beaten India in all three previous T20 World Cup encounters — stand between India and history.
The match at the Narendra Modi Stadium carries extra weight for India after the pain of the November 19, 2023, ODI World Cup final, when a stunned Rohit Sharma left the field before 93,000 fans. The T20 side partly atoned by winning the 2024 title under Rohit, and now Suryakumar, a street-smart Mumbai batter who has led the side for two years, has a chance to forge his own legacy and close a chapter that began with that 2023 defeat.
India can also draw confidence from a comprehensive win over a similar New Zealand team on March 9, 2025, in the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai — a victory Suryakumar was not part of but which underlines the matchup’s familiarity. Luck, however, has played a role: India survived a costly drop in the semifinal when Harry Brook spilled Sanju Samson, and the side has enjoyed favourable draws, venues and moments en route to the final.
Suryakumar’s captaincy has been praised, even as his batting on big days has been inconsistent. The final offers a defining moment: a strong performance would erase recent batting doubts; failure could bring heavy criticism. India must also choose wisely in selection. Abhishek Sharma, who began the tournament as a breakout star, has struggled and faces questions over his place if his technical vulnerabilities persist. A change there could lengthen the middle order at a time when Rinku Singh is also short of form.
Spin choices are another concern. Varun Chakravarthy’s effectiveness has waned; batsmen increasingly read his incoming deliveries as off-breaks or off-cutters. Kuldeep Yadav, used only once so far, is mentioned as a possible replacement if Varun’s confidence remains low.
For New Zealand, the danger is real. The Black Caps dismantled tournament favourites South Africa in the semifinals and boast match-winners such as Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips. India’s trump card could be Jasprit Bumrah: his four overs often decide games. Whether he opens the bowling against a red-hot Allen or is held back for the death will be a key tactical call. As Glenn Phillips noted on Friday, “Jasprit Bumrah is also a human. He can have an off day like us.” (PTI)
