Shocking Holi in Tripura: 20 Held for Drunk Driving, Rs 5.6 lakh Fines
Holi celebrations across Tripura were marred by several road accidents and large-scale preventive arrests as police intensified security to maintain order during the festival, leaving one person dead and others injured. Tripura Police said additional personnel were deployed at key locations and on major highways to ensure public safety, but multiple incidents were reported from different parts of the state.
In a fatal collision at Uttam Bhakta Chowmuhani in Sepahijala district, a motorcycle and a truck collided, resulting in the death of Prasenjit Ghosh, who was declared brought dead after being taken to hospital. Around 6:45 pm near Holy Cross College in West Tripura district, an unidentified vehicle allegedly struck a man described in reports as mentally challenged; he was rushed to AGMC and GBP Hospital for treatment. Earlier, at about 5:10 pm in Melaghar, Akas Mia of Mohanbhog suffered head and neck injuries in a single-vehicle accident after reportedly losing control.
Alongside accident response, police launched enforcement drives across the state to curb drunk driving and maintain safe celebrations. Twenty people were detained for driving under the influence of alcohol during the operations. Authorities also used preventive provisions of the Tripura Police Act to detain 206 people for allegedly consuming alcohol and roaming in public places, and reported a total of 445 preventive arrests across the state during Holi.
Traffic enforcement teams issued 330 challans under the Motor Vehicles Act, collecting fines totaling ₹5,69,500, and recovered an additional ₹13,000 in penalties for overspeeding. Police officials said the heightened measures aimed to protect residents and prevent festival-related disorder.
