Rahul Chetry Sparks Momentum in Margherita: Raijor Dal’s Bold Start
Rahul Chetry on Thursday, March 5 told reporters that the upcoming election in the 83rd Margherita assembly constituency will be a battle between “the soil and the people” and “money and power,” casting the race as a contest between grassroots representation and entrenched political influence. Chetry, the Raijor Dal candidate, made the remarks at a press conference at the party office in Ledo, Tinsukia district, after being formally nominated for the seat.
Chetry, who described himself as “the son of a small tea grower,” thanked Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi and party leaders for their trust. He framed his candidacy as a defence of ordinary citizens’ rights and dignity, and positioned the campaign as a struggle against candidates backed by wealth and political lineage. “This election will be a fight between the son of a small tea grower and those backed by immense wealth and political lineage,” he said.
Highlighting problems he says have been neglected for years, Chetry listed unemployment, poor road infrastructure, rising drug abuse, and ongoing challenges in healthcare and education as priorities his campaign will address. He also drew attention to the hardships faced by tea garden workers and small tea growers, saying these issues remain largely unaddressed despite long-standing political representation.
Chetry accused senior leaders and long-serving representatives of failing to resolve fundamental problems in Margherita. In his remarks he launched a scathing attack on Pradyut Bordoloi and sitting MLA Bhaskar Sharma, alleging that many core issues persist despite their tenures. He also criticised Congress nominee Prateek Bordoloi, calling him a “parachute candidate” with limited connection to local realities.
Asserting Raijor Dal’s claim to grassroots credibility, Chetry said the party’s history of struggles alongside Assam’s people underpins its decision to contest the seat. He called on voters for support and cooperation, promising to work toward the constituency’s overall development if elected.
