1,100 Kashmiri Students Stranded in Iran – Families Urge Govt
Srinagar, March 2 (IANS) — Panic and uncertainty have gripped families across Jammu and Kashmir after about 1,100 Kashmiri students were reported stranded in Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Parents say parts of Tehran and other areas have been declared “red zones,” communications are intermittent, and they are urgently appealing to the Government of India for evacuation or relocation from high‑risk areas.
Relatives told IANS the situation has left them deeply worried as many students remain unable to travel home. They said university restrictions and closed airspace have compounded the problem, preventing students from leaving even after advisories were issued.
“I had two children there. I evacuated my daughter four to five days ago, before the war started. I had planned to arrange a ticket for my son as well, but he said the university was not allowing students to leave, as they had their exams going on. Most of the airspace is blocked,” one family member said, adding that while they understand the government is working on evacuation plans, parents feel helpless and anxious.
Another relative, whose youngest sister is in Iran, described a tense atmosphere. “Recently, we learned that her area, and all of Tehran, have been declared a red zone. An advisory had been issued, but they were unable to return as they had their exams. We spoke to her last night; she said some missiles are being intercepted, but some are also hitting buildings. There is a lot of uncertainty and fear,” she said, noting that many students have not slept properly for days.
Families across the Valley say they are in constant contact with authorities and have submitted student details to relevant departments. They are urging swift diplomatic intervention and coordinated repatriation efforts, warning that prolonged uncertainty and limited communication are deepening distress. Families hope for an early, organised response to ensure the safe return of their children.
