Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to arrive in Mumbai today for his inaugural official visit to India. Arriving after his departure from Ottawa on Thursday, Carney’s itinerary also includes visits to Australia and Japan next week.
In a statement announcing the visit, the Canadian government confirmed that Carney will be in India from February 27 to March 2, 2026, at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The primary objectives are to strengthen bilateral ties and forge new partnerships across key sectors such as defense, energy, and artificial intelligence (AI). “The leaders will focus on elevating and expanding the Canada-India relationship, aiming for ambitious new agreements in trade, energy, technology, and more,” noted Carney’s office.
During his time in Mumbai, Carney will engage in a series of business meetings and discussions with Indian and Canadian CEOs, as well as industry experts, innovators, and educators. On March 1, he will travel to New Delhi, where, on March 2, he and Prime Minister Modi will hold delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House. These discussions will build on previous meetings, including their latest encounter during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg last November, as they assess the progress of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership.
Both leaders are expected to evaluate the outcomes of cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, energy, agriculture, and education. They will also discuss ongoing regional and global developments. The highlight of their talks will be at the India-Canada CEOs Forum scheduled for March 2, as both Prime Ministers aim to solidify a balanced partnership grounded in mutual respect.
Carney’s visit comes after a period of diplomatic tension between India and Canada, which saw a significant strain following allegations involving the Canadian government’s accusations towards India regarding the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in 2023. That incident led to a diplomatic standoff, including the recall and expulsion of diplomats from both nations. However, Carney’s victory in the April 2025 elections initiated a shift towards reconciliation, with this visit symbolizing a crucial “reset” in diplomatic relations.
Significantly, this visit occurs within a backdrop of increasing economic collaboration. In 2024, India became Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner, with two-way trade reaching $30.8 billion. Building on discussions from the last G20 Summit, the two nations are poised to kick off negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aiming to more than double bilateral trade to $70 billion by 2030.
As trade dynamics evolve, experts indicate that Canada’s focus on diversification arises partly from concerns over U.S. policy directions. “Donald Trump’s administration has pushed Canada to seek stronger ties with countries like India and China,” remarked Dinesh Patnaik, India’s High Commissioner in Ottawa. He emphasized that this trip will encompass a wide-ranging agenda, potentially leading to agreements in sectors such as research, quantum computing, education, and energy resources.
As Prime Ministers Carney and Modi work towards enhancing bilateral trade and cooperation, this visit underscores a pivotal moment in strengthening the long-standing ties between Canada and India.
