Heritage and Ambition: Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Descendant Joins BJP, Sparking Hope for Bengal’s Future
Sumitra Chattopadhyay, a fifth-generation descendant of the renowned novelist and poet Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 26, 2026, during a press conference at the party’s state office in Kolkata. Accompanied by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, her joining comes just ahead of the Assembly elections in West Bengal, where the BJP is emphasizing the cultural legacy epitomized by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and his famous anthem, “Vande Mataram.”
Upon joining, Chattopadhyay was welcomed by BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya and underscored her commitment to enhancing job opportunities in West Bengal. Critically, she expressed serious reservations regarding the state government’s employment policies, specifically targeting the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) Yuva Sathi scheme, which offers an unemployment allowance of ₹1,500 per month. Chattopadhyay pointed out that the TMC had previously scrapped a similar initiative called the Yuvashree scheme, raising questions about the government’s commitment to addressing unemployment.
“The deletion of records for lakhs of youth associated with employment exchanges through administrative orders, which were then supplanted by an ’employment bank’ housing approximately 4 million registrations, reflects poorly on job creation efforts,” she stated. Chattopadhyay lamented the abandonment of the Yuvashree scheme, asserting that the youth of Bengal deserved better pathways to employment.
In a notable event last September, Sumitra Chattopadhyay, alongside another descendant of Bankim Chandra, Sajal Chattopadhyay, publicly criticized the neglect of their ancestral home, attracting attention to the cultural heritage that they feel has been overlooked.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav welcomed Chattopadhyay into the party with affirmations of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s enduring influence. He emphasized that “Vande Mataram,” as composed by Chattopadhyay’s ancestor, significantly bolstered the spirit of nationalism and patriotism throughout India. The contributions of Bankim Chandra have consistently been highlighted by BJP leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, especially during discussions marking the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram” held in Parliament in December 2025.
Chattopadhyay’s entry into the BJP appears strategically timed, as the party seeks to enhance its connection with cultural icons while addressing pressing socio-economic issues in West Bengal. With job creation at the forefront of her agenda, her arrival may influence the party’s approach as it prepares for the upcoming elections in a state where employment opportunities remain a pivotal concern for voters.
As the political landscape evolves in West Bengal, the BJP’s emphasis on heritage and national pride, coupled with the critical examination of state governance, positions Sumitra Chattopadhyay’s joining as a potentially impactful development.
