Accused Apologises to Northeastern People, Urges End to Media Trials
Harsh Singh, one of two people named in a police complaint following a viral confrontation that sparked allegations of racial abuse against women from Northeast India, says he is cooperating with investigators and has “full faith in the judicial process.” The case was registered at PS Malviya Nagar on February 20, 2026, and names Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain, as the accused.
Police said the complaint alleges that at about 3:30 pm on February 20 three women tenants were carrying out electrical installation work at their rented premises when dust allegedly fell into the flat below. The complainants say Singh and his wife then verbally abused them and made derogatory racial remarks targeting them as women from the Northeastern region, used objectionable language, insulted their modesty and subjected them to criminal intimidation. No physical injuries were reported; the women cited mental harassment and humiliation.
Videos of the confrontation circulated widely online and prompted widespread outrage. Several civil society groups and student bodies condemned the incident, calling it another instance of racial discrimination faced by people from states such as Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram in metropolitan cities.
Responding to mounting criticism on social media, Singh told reporters he and his associates were extending “complete cooperation” to the Delhi Police and that he trusted the Indian judiciary to conduct an impartial examination of the facts. He said he was ashamed by the episode but denied any premeditated intent.
Singh gave his account of the confrontation, saying the dispute escalated after dust from the electrical work allegedly fell into his premises and damaged his property. He said one of his associates was “about to be attacked” and that the situation intensified after a woman intervened. He urged the public to “listen to both sides,” cautioned against a “media trial,” and said he would accept any punishment determined by a court of law.
He also alleged his family had been targeted online, claiming doctored and obscene images of his mother were being circulated. “Our family and profession should not be dragged into this,” he said, while issuing a personal apology to members of the Northeastern community for the hurt caused.
Officials said statements are being recorded and digital evidence, including viral video clips, is under examination. The complaint lists charges under Sections 79, 351(2), 3(5) and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita; further legal action will follow the investigation’s findings.
