The Land Rights Joint Struggle Committee has strongly condemned the transfer of 4,558 bighas of land in Chapar, Dhubri district, to the Adani Group for a proposed thermal power project, calling the state government’s move a plan to turn Assam into a colony for big industrial houses. In a press release, the group said the transfer represented a blatant favour to corporate interests under the state’s pro-business policies.

Co-convenors Pranab Dale and Subrata Talukdar said that of the total 4,558 bighas allotted to Adani, 3,485 bighas are government land. They said the land has been leased for 35 years and that Adani has paid only INR 5 crore for the entire parcel. The committee calculated this works out to roughly INR 14,347 per bigha, a figure they described as deeply unjust given Assam’s land value and public interest.

The committee warned that the state’s corporate-oriented approach will saddle Assam with costly power purchases in future. They argued the government will be forced to buy electricity generated by the project at high rates, effectively subsidising private profit and handing a lucrative revenue stream to the company.

The statement also criticised the recent eviction drive by the government, saying the chief minister publicly justified evictions as measures to secure the area’s future. The committee charged that the real motive has been to clear the way for corporate land transfers. It alleged that, unable to acquire land from communities that mounted strong resistance, the state has shifted focus to displacing vulnerable minority farming families who have cultivated the land for generations.

Expressing deep alarm, the group warned that if what it calls illegal land transfers continue, the entire corpus of Assam’s government land could fall into the hands of major capitalists such as Adani, Ambani or Ramdev within five years. The committee called the government’s policy a grave threat to Assam’s social fabric and ecological balance.

The Land Rights Joint Struggle Committee appealed to the public to mobilise against the land-transfer process to defend community rights, land and livelihoods, urging citizens to resist what it termed an unlawful handing over of public land to wealthy private interests.
