Assam’s Game-Changing Connectivity Surge — CM Sarma’s Historic Plan
Guwahati, February 23 (IANS) — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that the state is undergoing a historic transformation in connectivity as major bridge projects across the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are sharply reducing travel time and bringing remote areas into the mainstream. Sharing a post on X, he wrote: “Building Assam, bridge by bridge. Reducing travel time, expanding connectivity and bringing remote regions closer, we are moving towards an Atal, Avichal, Agragami Assam, faster than ever.”
Sarma said bridges over the Brahmaputra have become the backbone of Assam’s growth by linking the north and south banks and unlocking economic potential in districts that were earlier dependent on ferries and long detours. He pointed to landmark projects such as the Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, Bhupen Hazarika Setu and Kumar Vaskar Barma Setu as already having changed travel patterns, while several new bridges are at various stages of construction.
“The Brahmaputra is no longer a barrier to development. It has become a connector,” the chief minister said, noting that improved infrastructure has strengthened trade and tourism and expanded access to healthcare and education, particularly for people living in char areas and other riverine belts.
He added that reduced travel times have boosted industrial activity and enhanced emergency response capabilities, while also improving integration with neighbouring states and national highways. According to Sarma, these gains are helping to link local markets more efficiently and to attract investment to previously isolated regions.
The state government, he said, is working closely with the Centre to ensure timely completion of bridge projects, insisting on global engineering standards and attention to environmental concerns. Sarma framed the infrastructure push as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of seamless connectivity in the Northeast, saying it positions Assam as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
“With every bridge completed, Assam moves closer to becoming self-reliant, resilient and growth-oriented,” he said, reiterating that infrastructure development remains a top priority for his administration.
