Trump Orders Global 10% Tariff on All Countries — Markets Brace
US President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order imposing a 10 percent global tariff on imports from all countries, effective immediately, the White House said. Announcing the move on Truth Social from the Oval Office, Trump called it a “Great Honour” to put the tariff into effect, part of a broader protectionist agenda he says is aimed at correcting balance-of-payments deficits and combating what he describes as unfair trade practices.
A White House official said the tariff will remain in place until another legal authority is invoked and stressed that U.S. trading partners are expected to continue honoring existing trade agreements. The measure follows earlier emergency and reciprocal duties that the administration has used to raise revenue and shield domestic industries.
The order came shortly after a major legal setback at the U.S. Supreme Court. In a 6–3 decision, the court ruled that the administration exceeded its authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by imposing broad-based import tariffs. The majority opinion, led by Chief Justice John Roberts and joined by Justices Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and the court’s three liberal justices, found that IEEPA does not explicitly grant the president authority to levy customs duties — a power the Constitution assigns to Congress.
Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented, arguing for a wider reading of presidential emergency powers. The ruling invalidated billions of dollars in previously collected “reciprocal” and emergency tariffs and said the government may be required to refund an estimated $130 billion to $175 billion in revenue.
Calling the verdict “terrible” and “ludicrous,” Trump said he would instead invoke Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. That provision allows a temporary import surcharge of up to 15 percent for 150 days to address balance-of-payments problems. The president also confirmed that national security tariffs imposed under Section 232 and trade enforcement measures under Section 301 would remain in place.
Trump added that alternative steps would be used to preserve tariff revenues and insisted foreign exporters would not benefit for long. He said “the India deal is on,” indicating that recent bilateral arrangements — including a reduced reciprocal rate of 18 percent — would continue under the new legal approach. (ANI)
