উচ্চতম ন্যায়ালয়ৰ আদেশৰ পিছতেই গোলাঘাটত বনবিভাগ: ৫৯ পৰিয়াল উচ্ছেদৰ নোটিশ
The Forest Department has intensified eviction operations in Golaghat district’s forest belt, issuing fresh eviction notices on February 21, 2026, to 59 families living in Merapani’s 2 No. Negeribil, officials said. The notices, signed by the Divisional Forest Officer of the Golaghat forest division, ordered the families to vacate the encroached land within seven days. The notices were served during a joint operation involving the Forest Department, the Central Armed Police Forces and the district police.
The action follows a legal development at the national level. On February 10, 2026, the Supreme Court of India delivered a judgment in favour of the Assam Forest Department, removing the legal obstacles that had delayed eviction proceedings. The dispute over encroachment in the area began on August 8, 2025, when the department first issued eviction notices to 205 families in 2 No. Negeribil. Subsequently, 59 families from Negeribil and 11 families from Uriamghat in Sarupathar sought a stay on the evictions from the Gauhati High Court.
Departmental sources said many residents refused to accept or sign the new notices when they were handed out on February 21, 2026; in those cases, officials followed legal procedure and pasted the notices at the gates of the affected houses. Some residents did accept the notices, the officials added.
The Forest Department has warned that if the families who received notices do not submit new applications or representations within the seven-day period specified, eviction operations at the designated locations could begin imminently. The department’s move underscores renewed enforcement of forest protection measures in Golaghat after the Supreme Court’s ruling.
