MP’s Death Exposes Alarming Healthcare Gaps — Urgent Reforms Needed
Shillong MP Ricky A.J. Syngkon died on the evening of February 19 after collapsing at the Ratson Arena Futsal Ground, a sudden event that has renewed focus on long-standing shortages of doctors at primary and community health centres across Meghalaya. Eyewitnesses said those present immediately contacted the 108 ambulance service, but because the ambulance was delayed he was rushed in a private vehicle to the nearby Mawlai Mawiong Community Health Centre (CHC). According to those witnesses, no doctor was on duty at the CHC; only nursing staff were present.
Recognising the seriousness of Syngkon’s condition and the absence of a medical officer to provide emergency intervention, the nurses advised that he be shifted to a higher facility. He was later taken to Dr H. Gordon Roberts Hospital, where medical staff declared him dead at approximately 8:42 p.m. on February 19. The sequence of events has prompted public concern over emergency preparedness and staffing at government health facilities.
Community Health Centres are expected to function 24 hours and act as referral units capable of handling urgent cases, especially in areas close to the state capital. The reported absence of a doctor at Mawlai Mawiong CHC has intensified worries about staffing gaps in the government healthcare system and raised questions about the condition of health centres in more remote parts of Meghalaya.
When media visited the CHC the following day seeking clarification, district health officials present for an inspection declined to comment, saying they were not authorised to speak and would submit a report to the state government. Syngkon had repeatedly highlighted vacant doctor posts in PHCs (primary health centres) and CHCs during his tenure, and his death has amplified calls from residents and stakeholders for accountability and urgent corrective measures to address chronic doctor shortages.
