Devastating Encounter: Wild Elephants Rampage and Destroy Homes in Chirang
On Monday night, November 11, a herd of wild elephants caused significant destruction in Chirang, Assam, near the India-Bhutan border. The elephants ransacked the home of Niranjan Das, consuming stored rice, flour, and vegetables, and leaving extensive damage in their wake. Fortunately, Das and his family escaped unharmed despite the suddenness of the attack.
The incident highlights a growing issue in the region, with elephants, presumably from the nearby Manas National Park, frequently venturing into local villages at night in search of food. These nocturnal incursions are increasingly damaging crops and property, threatening the livelihoods of local farmers.
In response to the latest incident, officials from the Bishnupur beat office of the forest department quickly arrived to evaluate the situation. The recurring entry of wild elephants into human settlements underscores a significant and escalating challenge, emphasising the need for effective solutions to protect both wildlife and human communities in the area.
