Urgent Alert: NSCN (IM) Vows to Rekindle Armed Conflict – A Threat Looms
The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), an insurgent group engaged in a ceasefire since 1997, has called for third-party intervention to resolve the ongoing deadlock concerning the Naga political issue. The group’s general secretary, Thuingaleng Muivah, stated that if this proposal is rejected, the NSCN-IM may resume armed resistance.
The deadlock centers around the Framework Agreement signed with the Indian government on August 3, 2015, which Muivah claims the government is failing to honor. The key contention points are the recognition of the Naga national flag and constitution. These symbols are seen by the NSCN-IM as vital to the unique history and sovereignty of Nagalim, which encompasses regions in Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and parts of Myanmar inhabited by the Naga people.
Muivah asserts that the agreement marked a significant shift by recognizing the Naga issue as a conflict between two sovereign entities, contrasting with the previous view of it being an internal matter. He emphasizes that any political settlement must include acknowledgment of the Naga flag and constitution, warning that disregarding these components may lead to the collapse of the peace process and a resurgence of violence.
While the NSCN-IM remains hopeful for a peaceful resolution, they insist that the Indian government must fulfill its commitments to avoid further conflict. The potential role of an external mediator is seen as a possible path to break the impasse, underscoring the NSCN-IM’s commitment to achieving a peaceful settlement while defending Nagalim’s sovereignty and identity.
