Transforming Assam: An Ambitious Feasibility Plan to Conquer Devastating Floods
The Assam government has been tasked to prepare a comprehensive feasibility report on 271 wetlands for the diversion of floodwaters by December, as part of an initiative aimed at revitalizing wetlands and addressing flood issues. During a two-day visit to Assam, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan conducted review meetings on topics like law and order, border management with neighboring states, flood control strategies, and the progress of tribal councils.
The North-Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) had pinpointed these wetlands, and the Union Home Secretary was briefed on the steps taken toward their rejuvenation. The Water Resources Department (WRD) emphasized the significance of restoring these depleted wetlands for floodwater storage. Initially, nine wetlands across seven districts have been identified for potential floodwater diversion.
The project, possibly amounting to Rs 500 crore, currently awaits a definitive survey to ascertain how many wetlands could be included within this budget. Though the initiative won’t directly control the Brahmaputra River, it aims to manage the water levels of its tributaries that traverse several villages and towns. The feasibility study seeks to evaluate the opportunity of connecting crucial tributaries with significant wetlands to achieve this goal.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the Sustainable Wetland and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT) project, intended to be executed under the Asian Development Bank (ADB) guidance. This grand project embodies a strategic move to enhance flood management and wetland conservation in the region, promising significant environmental and infrastructural benefits.
