Shocking Tragedy: Villagers Arrested After Heartbreaking Electrocution of Two Elephants in Assam
On Tuesday, three villagers were arrested for allegedly killing two elephants in separate incidents in the Kulsi and Singra forest ranges of the Kamrup (West) forest division. The elephants were reportedly electrocuted while foraging in paddy fields, according to officials.
In the Kulsi range, authorities arrested Bhagirath Rabha from Dhangargaon village in a specialized operation. He was charged under various sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, after confessing to electrifying a paddy field, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old male elephant. The suspect was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup (Amingaon) and was remanded to judicial custody. The cause of death was confirmed as cardiac arrest due to electrocution.
In another incident within the Singra range, Ramakanta Boro from Dangpur village and Akuk Rabha from Jarapara village were apprehended on Monday. They are accused of setting up electric traps targeting elephants, resulting in the death of an eight-year-old male elephant. Equipment related to elephant poaching was discovered during searches of the suspects’ homes. They are facing charges under both the Wildlife (Protection) Act and the Assam Forest (Regulation) Act.
These arrests underscore increasing concerns regarding human-elephant conflicts in the region, attributed to habitat encroachment and subsequent conflicts between villagers and wildlife.
