Empowering Futures: The Urgent Need for a Premier Science College in Dimapur, Advocates CM
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio emphasized the necessity of establishing a full-fledged Science College in Dimapur, pointing to the district’s size and strategic location. During the foundation stone unveiling for PM-USHA projects at Dimapur Government College (DGC), Rio highlighted the importance of quality educational institutions for producing skilled citizens, crucial for boosting Nagaland’s economy. He stressed prioritizing the implementation of innovative programs like the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) to achieve this goal.
Dimapur’s strategic position, with available rail and air connectivity, makes it an attractive destination for students not just from Nagaland, but from the broader region as well, Rio noted. He addressed concerns about low enrollment at New Model College, Wakching, under Mon district, attributing the issue to a mismatch between teacher-student ratios. Rio proposed that new colleges should be demand-driven, considering the number of feeder schools nearby to enhance admissions.
Reflecting on Nagaland’s economy, predominantly consumer-driven due to limited private sector jobs, Rio stressed the role of educational institutions like DGC in nurturing responsible, educated citizens who can become societal assets. He acknowledged the collective role of students, parents, teachers, and the community in students’ success.
The foundation of a new academic building for Commerce, an incubation center, skill hub, girls’ hostel, and restroom was laid during the event, with ministers and advisors CL John, Temjen Imna Along, Moatoshi Longkumer, and Mhathung Yanthan attending. Providing insights on PM-USHA, M Kire, State Project Director for Higher Education, highlighted the implementation of 27 projects under various components benefiting state colleges through RUSA 1.0 and 2.0. These projects include building library facilities, hostels, and academic blocks, with the funding for three new academic buildings approved at significant costs. The construction initiatives underscore the government’s focus on strengthening educational infrastructure and fostering inclusive development.
