Shocking Surge: GMCH Records 31 Alarming Road Accident Cases in Just 24 Hours
Guwahati, Nov 2: During the vibrant Diwali celebrations, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) recorded a surge in road traffic accident cases, tallying 31 incidents within a 24-hour period. Notably, 27 of these cases occurred in Kamrup (Metro). The report spans from 8 am on November 1 to 8 am on November 2. An analysis of the age distribution of the injured reveals: two cases in the 0-10 age group, 2 in the 10-20 group, a significant 18 in the 20-30 bracket, 6 from the 30-40 demographic, and 3 involving individuals over 40. Among the victims, nine required hospitalization, and tragically, one was declared dead on arrival. Additionally, GMCH reported four cases related to Diwali burns and five instances of physical assault.
A separate tragic incident occurred on Friday, when two young individuals lost their lives in a road accident on GS Road near Khanapara. Deepit Dey, aged 22, and Konamika Narzary, 19, were killed instantly as their speeding black Scorpio collided with another vehicle before slamming into a foot overbridge. The accident took place around 3:15 am. Another passenger, Niharika Basumatary, 23, suffered minor injuries and was discharged after receiving first aid. According to police sources, the vehicle was moving from the Khanapara side when it crashed with a car executing a U-turn at the traffic point. The collision caused Dey’s vehicle to swerve violently into the foot overbridge, leading to the tragic fatalities.
The incidents underscore the need for heightened road safety measures during festivities, as roads become busier, and the risk of accidents escalates. Enforcement agencies are urged to intensify preventive actions and awareness campaigns, aiming to reduce such unfortunate occurrences in the future.
