Assam Health Alert: GMCH Superintendent Confirms Chickenpox, Dismisses Monkeypox Fears – Relief and Reassurance!
Abhijeet Sarma, Superintendent of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), clarified that there are no cases of monkeypox at the facility, countering alarmist media reports that inaccurately claimed a monkeypox-related death had occurred. Initial reports alleged a death from monkeypox in the hospital’s Neuro Surgery Department at the Cardiothoracic and Neuroscience Centre, further stating that the deceased had come into contact with three staff members—a nurse, a technician, and a ward attendant—who were showing symptoms. Additionally, these reports suggested another patient with monkeypox was being treated in stable condition.
However, Superintendent Sarma addressed these claims by confirming to India Today NE that the actual diagnosis was chickenpox, not monkeypox, highlighting a significant error in media reporting which led to widespread concern. Sarma advised that the misinformation resulted in unnecessary panic, reaffirming that GMCH is free of monkeypox cases. This statement aims to alleviate public fears and rectify misconceptions propagated by earlier narratives.
In related news, Assam has launched ‘Bhasha Gaurav Week’ to honor Assamese as a classical language, spotlighting the cultural significance and pride associated with this recognition. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its linguistic heritage.
